CAREGIVER

Job Summary:

The Care Companion will provide one-on-one assistance in private residences to seniors, those with chronic illness or who are recuperating.  The residence may be a house, facility or hospital. Assistance may include homemaking, personal care and behavioral issues.  Care Companions will always focus on encouraging independence to the client’s ability, and providing care in a meaningful, life-affirming manner. Homemaking can include cooking, light housekeeping, laundry, medication reminders, exercise, transportation, pet care and social engagement.  Personal care can include bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, toileting, exercises, ambulation and transfer in additional to all homemaking services. The Care Companion will follow the Individual Service Plan (ISP) which includes the Care Plan, Engagement Plan, Behavior Plan and Success Plan; and provide feedback and recommendations to the Care Manager on the client’s status and care concerns.

Job Requirements:

The Care Companion position will require constant mobility and the ability to move around the client’s residence and to move and assist the client with and without mechanical aids.  The Care Companion will frequently lift and support the client, have constant use of hands to handle and feel objects, and write notes.  The Care Companion must have excellent vision with depth perception, hearing and good speech.  He/She must be able to lift 50 pounds.

The Care Companion shall:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.  Certified Nursing Assistant or Home Health Aide certification preferred. 
  • Possess a valid California driver's license.
  • Possess Bodily Injury car insurance of 100,000 / 300,000.
  • Have the ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Have one or more years experience working in home care or a long-term care facility as a caregiver. 
  • Knowledge and experience working with clients with memory care needs and difficult behaviors is highly desirable.
  • Have training related to the care if adults needing hands on personal care such as bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, toileting, ambulation and transfer is preferred.
  • Have training related to the care of adults needing special diets is preferred.
  • Have the ability to read, analyze and interpret instructions.
  • Have a valid certificate of training in First Aid, & CPR
    (People’s Care offers these courses at no cost to employees.)
  • Have a physical exam which includes a test for tuberculosis, including a statement that he/ she is physically qualified to perform his/her assigned duties.
  • Have a criminal and child abuse index clearance record.
  • Be informed of the requirement to report suspected elder abuse and violations of individual client rights.
  • Complete a personnel record, including a history of employment, education and references.
  • Have the ability to write care notes and reports.
  • Have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from family members, understanding and making proper referrals to the Geriatric Care Manager.
  • Have the ability to work with varying levels of dementia, ethnicities and behaviors.
  • Have the ability to use independent judgment and handle emergencies.
  • Be available 24/7 for client emergencies.
  • Have reliable personal transportation.

Standard Requirements:

  • Is knowledgeable of residents’ rights and ensures an atmosphere which allows for the privacy, dignity and well-being of all residents in a safe, secure environment.
  • Supports, cooperates with, and implements specific procedures and programs for:
  • Safety, including universal precautions and safe work practices, establish fire/safety/disaster plans, risk management, and security, report and/or correct unsafe working conditions, equipment repair and maintenance needs.
  • Confidentiality of all data, including resident, employee and operation data.
  • Quality Assurance and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Compliance with current law and policy to provide a work environment free from sexual harassment and all illegal and discriminatory behavior.
  • Supports and participates in common teamwork:
  • Cooperates and works together with all co-workers; plan and complete job duties with minimal supervisory direction including appropriate judgment.
  • Uses tactful, appropriate communications in sensitive and emotional situations.
  • Follows up as appropriate with supervisor, co-workers or residents regarding reported complaints, problems and concerns.
  • Promotes positive public relations with residents, family members and guests.
  • Complete requirements for in-service training, acceptable attendance, uniform and dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Understand and practice the mission, philosophy and values of People’s Care Inc. and the In-Home Care Division.
  • Ensure compliance with labor laws, disclosure regulations, confidentiality regulations and company policies and procedures.
  • Implement approved emergency procedures in event of fire, earthquake, or other natural disaster.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and healthy environment.
  • Assist clients to maximize their independence throughout all areas of care, support, communication, social, physical and intellectual activity.
  • Implement care in accordance with the ISP and People’s Care policies and procedures.
  • Assists clients with homemaking and personal care, nutrition and encourages appropriate self care as listed in the job summary above.
  • Provide transportation for client needs as indicated in the ISP.
  • Provide a comfortable living environment for the client ensuring the living areas are clean, well ventilated with proper lighting and furniture arrangement.
  • Applies the principles of proper body mechanics during all activities.
  • Report client change of condition immediately to the Geriatric Care Manager. These can include physical condition, attitude, appearance, behavior and physical ability.
  • Attend training sessions individually and in groups.
  • Work closely with the Care Manager to understand the client’s ISP (Care, Social Engagement, Behavior and Success plans), and retain on-the-job training regarding the client’s specific needs.
  • Identifying barriers to achieving the ISP objectives and how those barriers can be overcome, making recommendations to the Care Manager.
  • Ensure the ISP is successfully implemented.
  • Communicate on a regular basis with the Care Manager, referring client and family inquiries and comments to the Care Manager for follow up.
  • With the Care Manager, evaluate client’s condition and provide feedback and recommendations.
  • Report special incidents to the Care Manager and suspected client abuse according to laws and regulations.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in continuing education.
  • Complete and turn in all care notes and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Be available 24/7 for emergencies related to the care of the client, substituting for other staff as needed.
  • Perform administrative and other duties upon request.
  • Follows all protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Work cooperatively and supports the efforts of all People’s Care Inc. services.

 

Salary: $8 - $10 Hourly based on experience
Work Schedule: AM, PM, Night shifts, Live-in
