Training Program
Adaptive Skills Training Program
The Adaptive Skills Training Program is a service for individuals who need assistance in developing skills to live in their own home and access the community. People's Care maintains a high quality level for the program and standardizes the methods used in such program to increase efficiency and be consistent with assistance provided across staff members.

The individual undergoing the program will be guided with daily scheduled tasks and be given prompts on how a certain task is conducted. Once a task is carried out properly by the individual, the behavior will be reinforced positively. This method enables recognition of the correct response and will help the individual perform independently in future similar situations. To help the individual live a more self-sufficient life, the program includes training for skills in grooming, feeding, toileting, personal hygiene, bathing, dressing, money handling and mobility.

With the methods used in the program, the individuals suited to go through the training are those who exhibit mild to moderate to profound deficits in adaptive functioning. Consequently, applicants for the program are expected to have low to moderate levels of self care skills. To remedy such weaknesses, a variety of constructive and life-enhancing training sessions will be conducted to encourage independence and improve the level of lifestyle especially in areas affecting:

  • emotional well-being
  • physical health
  • community access
  • daily tasks
  • opportunities for employment
  • contact with family and friends
  • acceptance into the neighborhood; and
  • promotion of integrity and self-worth

These skills may seem minute for normal people but for People's Care, teaching such skills is vital for the individual to adapt to a normal way of life. This gives them their chance to contribute to society as responsible citizens.
