People's Care Independent Living Services (ILS) program, is available 24 hours a day, on an on-call basis. Our system of response to an emergency is based on the client’s Individual Support Plan (ISP) and is directed by the individual.
In this program, People's Care specially designed the training and habilitation services to include:
- Assistance in locating and evaluating available independent housing
- Sessions on maintaining the household
- Training in financial management
- Enhancing personal life skills and building relationships
- Assistance in accessing medical and specialized health care
- Support in looking for avenues for activities and social interaction
- Mobility training and assistance
- Helping the individual build their own interdependent support system of friends, family members, neighbors, relatives and coworkers
- Family life training (birth control, personal safety, boundaries)
- Developing parental skills with training sessions on nutrition, discipline and positive role modeling
- Assistance with finding resources for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse
- Counseling on development of personal security, dignity and self respect
- Support in the after-recovery period for drug and alcohol addicts, correction and judicial referrals
The goal is to focus on a person’s abilities and their priorities in life. People's Care will develop an Individual Service Plan for Independent Living Skills which touch aspects such as self care, money management, mobility, socialization, community membership, self direction and developing personal choice, physical health, mental health and family life.
The Independent Living Skills Training Program is geared to support the individual gain control over life enabling the establishment and maintenance of personal and professional relationships. It helps the individual become a productive member of the community by making responsible choices and developing social consciousness.
- Are developmentally disabled
- Are receiving services from the regional center
- Are desiring support services and
- Enhancing personal life skills and building relationships
- Have demonstrated the potential to live on their own home within a time period determined by the regional center.
Clients do not need to have specific skills or criteria to participate in the ILS program. Services will be provided to all individuals regardless of type of level of disability. The number of days and hours of service will be determined by the I.D. team. The primary goal of the ILS program is to ensure that adults with developmental disabilities safely and effectively master the skills to live a meaningful and fulfilling lifestyle in their community. These supports and services will be individualized to meet the self-directed needs and desires of the individual.
Four principles make up the hallmark of People’s Care ILS program’s philosophy:

- Respect while being assisted in a caring atmosphere
Based on the above four principles, our Independent Living Service (ILS) program is designed to assist adults with developmental disabilities, and the community at large, in utilizing behavioral strategies, interventions, and one-to-one assistance in the home or in the community setting; this unique service helps to enhance the client's and/or family’s level of independence to survive and thrive in our society.
The primary goal of our ILS program is to ensure that adults with developmental disabilities become as self-sufficient as possible while receiving necessary support to live in their community of choice. These supports and services will be individualized to meet the self-directed needs and desires of the individual.
People’s Care, Independent Living Service (ILS) program is also committed to working with families to develop working partnerships with parents and caretakers and offer support that will ensure consistency in the implementation of independence and assistance services.
People’s Care ILS program provides support and services through person-centered planning. We work to understand the unique needs of the client and help to develop a plan that changes with the client’s needs and choices.
We Provide Support in:
- The client’s needs and wants through their Individualized Service Plan (ISP)
- Enabling the client’s choices, and helping the client experience increased levels of self-confidence and self-esteem.
- Encouraging clients to do the things they are capable of doing
- Personal support services to a client who needs specific assistance
- Providing rapid respond services to emergency situations. (Staffing issues, safety, medical, etc.)
This area of service promotes client-directed services. Our goal is to instill a sense of pride and confidence in a client by encouraging personal choice and options. This can include some of the following:
- Making appointments
- Finding a job
- Interviewing, selecting, or firing a personal attendant
- Learning the laws and regulations (Section 8, MediCal, SSI, etc.)
- Leading their ID Team or Circle of Support meetings
- Medication administration
- Self-Advocacy training
- Communication training
People’s Care ILS program also specializes in providing a nurturing learning environment to those individuals whom are parents raising children. All training related to parenting will be conducted by community resources and discussed with the client’s Regional Center Service Coordinator for approval.
We Provide Assistance in:
- Developing parenting skills
- Budgeting for a family
- Disciplining a child
- Developing parent-child relationships
- Creating a loving and healthy environment
- Understanding illnesses and diseases
- Toys and equipment
- What is child abuse
People’s Care ILS program will assist the client in attaining any equipment necessary to allow them to function independently and increase their quality of life. All Adaptive Technology training will be discussed and coordinated with the client’s Regional Center Service Coordinator.
This May Include:
- Universal Lifeline(with your telephone company)
- Telephone equipment or services
- Communication devices
- Mobility devices or equipment
- Reader or interpreter
- Computers with adaptive equipment
People’s Care ILS program will also provide, as needed, in the scheduling and follow ups of medical appointments. Our goal is to ensure the health of the client. We Will:
- Provide training on making appointments
- Assist in arranging transportation
- Assist and provide transportation as needed
- Train client on how to communicate with medical professionals
- Teach on medical rights and confidentiality
- Request that the client receive:
- Yearly physical and lab work
- Yearly dental evaluation and cleaning
- An eye exam every 2 years
- Exams for specialty doctors as needed
