An intense program of personal assistance services will be provided which includes behavioral support and community integration services to children and adults with mild to severe disabilities in self-help skills, as well as mild to severe behaviors. The program targets to help individuals overcome barriers at home and within the community and to support them into everyday living situations.
PAS is individualized (1:1) providing personal assistance services for children (5 —17 yrs) and adults (18 – 70 yrs) with a focus on Autism, ADHD; mild to severe MR ; Epilepsy; Cerebral Palsy; and similar developmental challenges.
What makes this program unique is that we match the consumer with trained staff. Each staff is matched closely to meet the individuals need so that the consumer and family member(s) gains trust and confidence in knowing their love one is in a secure and safe environment. Our staff is trained in meeting the family’s goals and objectives and optimizing independence through community involvement and in-home structure as needed. Once the match is approved by the parent, consumer, or caretaker, the consumer may be able to optimize his/her independent functioning in his or her home or community. PAS strives to bring a “take pressure off” approach to support both consumer and family through our program. With the right match and 1:1 personal assistance service, the service is more effective and alleviates anxiety, frustration, and stress from you, and most importantly the consumer! In addition, our staff act as mentors and positive role models for our consumers, while providing necessary support to keep them focused on positive life experiences.
The following are some of People's Care main goals in implementing the program:
- To assist families in the placement of their loved one in an after-school program, park or a work site. Provide behavior intervention techniques and to support the consumer in reducing his/her behavior episodes at home or in the community by providing 1:1 behavioral personal assistance for families with minor or adult age children or adults with Autism, or any other developmental disability, and exhibit behavioral challenges such as self-injuries, physical aggression, and non-compliance
- PAS provides services at home where the child/adult has not been able to succeed in other services due to their diagnoses. Parents do not have to be present while their love one receives structured recreation and behavioral intervention with supervision from our trained staff allowing parents the opportunity to focus on other things
- Assist in self-help skills and chores normally practiced in the home
- PAS will provide 1:1 for consumers with challenge behaviors who are not able to participate in a regular day program and in need of in-home or community personal assistance services
- PAS will assist children and/or adults with challenge behaviors in recreational skills and help the consumer participate in community activities at an after-school or summer program, recreational centers, park, etc. This allows the consumer to utilize public services and be a member of society
- PAS helps develop plans for consumers with challenge behaviors who participate in our program by training our staff with behavioral intervention and strategies conducted by our Behavioral Analyst and Registered Nurse.
- PAS is also designed to do more than simply care and provide behavioral assistance, our staffs are trained to mentor our clients with challenge behaviors and provide activities that are structured to promote acquisition of skills to enhance independence.
- PAS assist teens and adults with challenge behaviors to participate in adult school or learning centers to learn new skills. This helps build a better life for your consumer and family.
All behavioral personal assistant services at People's Care will focus on helping and encouraging the individual to actually achieve, a level of skills that a non-disabled person of the same age would be doing. Objective will range from consumers to be able to complete their functions at home and out in the community with the assistance of the personal assistant. The sole purpose of our Behavioral Personal Assistance Services is to provide intense, support services at the consumer’s home that delays or eliminates the need for nursing home placement, or who are at risk of being placed in a community care facility, or to a specialized facility or State Developmental Center.
- Communication:
Support staff will encourage positive interaction in either the home or community environment and determine the need and level of any behavioral assistance with a focus on communicating in means that are most comfortable for the consumer.
- Adaptation
When behavioral intervention and comprehensive self-help skills assistance are necessary for certain individuals, or those that may not otherwise be able to participate in a regular day program, staff will assist in adapting specific responsibilities/tasks to fit their needs and skills. Such adaptations can be developed and maintained as household chores, or in a community setting.
- Activity
Assistance in exercise and recreational skills is a must, as it promotes good health and well being. Staff will support your child or adult to participate in community activities, afterschool program/summer program, recreational centers, and parks etc., allowing them to utilize public services and contribute positively to their community while staying active.
- Cooperation
Is highly valued; and professional opinions are sometimes needed due to more intense support needs of a consumer. We have PAS consultants, such as a Behavioral Analyst and Registered Nurse’s to provide input and feedback. In some cases, acquiring our services could delay or eliminate the need for certain placements, via nursing homes, community care facilities, other specialized facilities or a State Developmental Center.

The intake of potential consumers and procedures are a collaborative effort among the regional center and/or other agencies, family members, and our PAS/CIT Program Team. Depending upon the reason for referrals, PAS/CIT Program Supervisor/Manager/Director will complete an initial intake packet of the consumer before admission. Our team will assess the appropriateness of the consumer referred by comparing our entrance criteria to the consumer’s skill level and service needs. An Acceptance Letter with proposed service (either PAS or CIT, or both) and hours will be sent to Regional Center. If service is not appropriate, then a Denial Letter will be sent with an explanation. Both services can be offered for the consumer if necessary to meet the consumer’s needs. Both services have diverse roles and focus on specific needs for the consumer. PAS is geared to focus on support and assistance at home or in the community, and community integration focuses on training with set objectives out in a community setting.
What makes our PAS/CIT programs so unique is that we match the consumer with trained staff. With the right match, the service is more effective in quality of services, and most importantly the consumer will benefit the service.
People's Care will focus on helping and encouraging the consumer actually achieve, or come as close as possible, to a level of skills that a non-disabled person of the same age would be doing. Target will range from consumers to be able to complete their functions at home and out in the community. Depending on the consumer’s level of functioning, it will be up to the ID team to determine how long the service will be needed for each individual. Per our program design policy, any changes that need to be made regarding services, an interdisciplinary team meeting will be called immediately for possible modification of the service, the objective, or both. Interdisciplinary team includes Consumer, Parent or Circle of Support, Regional Center, and People's Care.
